How to Write a Book: 5 Techniques to Get Started

Are you waiting for motivation in order to write your book? I’m sorry to tell you this, but waiting for motivation is actually killing your writing. I’m going to share with you 5 techniques you should do instead, in order to start and finish your book.

Before I get to that list, if all you’re doing is waiting for motivation, you may never find it. That’s because motivation doesn’t write your book. You do. So here are the 5 techniques that you can incorporate today to start seeing progress in your writing.

How to Write a Book: 5 Techniques to Get Started

  1. Build Your Creative Arsenal

Set realistic goals and break them down to manageable pieces.

For instance, if you want to complete your novel in the next 3 months, that gives you roughly 12 weeks, or 84 days, to write. Mark a calendar with your writing days and goals (ie. The amount of words you want to write) and create a routine around this.

  1. Fill Up Your Writing Tank

Consider a car. Before you can drive it, you need to fill it with fuel. Same goes with your writing. Before you can write you need to fill up your writing tank. So what does this look like?

Firstly, read. Secondly, have a support group. And thirdly, celebrate your progress, big or small. You deserve it!

  1. Overcome the Roadblocks

A roadblock, in this instance, is a barrier that hinders you from writing—also known as a writer’s block. To overcome it, you must first identify what is causing you to procrastinate.

Are you overwhelmed and stressed due to work, school or family? Are you distracted by the latest streaming show you’ve been watching? Are you trying to perfect the first chapter? And are you afraid no one will like your writing and no agent nor publisher will accept it?

  1. Stay Disciplined for the Long Haul

When it comes to writing, please know that you’re not creating a novel for instant success. A small minority of authors gain instant success with their creative passion. You are in this for the long haul. So stay disciplined by writing everyday; and embrace the journey, the process, and your overall growth as a writer.

  1. Embrace the Blank Page

Starting a book is one of the hardest parts in writing. If you find yourself staring at a blank page, there are many reasons why, and ways to work around this.

For instance, it may mean that you don’t have a strong enough plot and well-developed characters to get started yet. So work on that instead.
